What are some of the problems ociated with a high national debt?

I think I would like to answer this question in a Philippine setting and not in particular the US economy. Since the time of Marcos the country had been besieged by this kind of problem, the ever increasing national debt which is sometimes used as the measure for the President's ability to lead the country effectively. The primary reason the country is borrowing money from outside sources is to financially augment the government's fund to create projects to improve the infrastructure and improve the lives of the people. However, these funds should be utilized in a way that the economy be able to grow and the government that is without graft and corruption may also be able to pay off its debt. Unfortunately, history-wise the country had been burdened by the increasing outside debt due to graft and corruption in the government which the President cannot control. Money is not the root of all evil, its the love for money that will influence every crooked mind to do evil. Grandstanding and politicking is too much in this country, even if President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will step down nobody can lead this country into progress and be at par with our neighbors.
