Why did the Japanese team up with Hitler in WW2? And don't you think they get off easy in terms of history and?

Japan saw teaming up with Germany as an option to control the world. Japan wanted natural resources from mainland China and the south Pacific. It was strategic. They got off easy because the of Nanking and the invasions into mainland China were less recorded, while the Germans committed genocide. After the bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki a sense of sympathy was felt for Japan because so many civilians died. Also, they only fought the US, while the Germans fought western Europe and as a result France felt they were entitled to justice.
